THE EVOLUTION OF THE NON-SURGICAL BLEPHAROPLASTY
As patient demand grows for subtle, surgery-free eye rejuvenation, CO₂ laser technology is emerging as a powerful tool in clinical practice. Dr Alexander Parys discusses results, recovery and real-world outcomes
YOU HAVE A STRONG MEDICAL BACKGROUND. HOW HAS THIS SHAPED YOUR APPROACH TO TREATING THE EYE AREA?
“My medical background is probably one of the biggest reasons I’ve become so obsessed with safety, anatomy and patient selection – especially around the eyes. The skin is delicate, there are important structures, and there isn’t much room for error.
“I trained in emergency medicine and interventional radiology in the NHS for around a decade, which gives you a mindset of anticipating risk, spotting problems early, and having a clear plan if things don’t go as expected. In aesthetics, that translates into very detailed consultations, realistic expectations, thorough consent, and a conservative, stepwise approach.
“Around the eyes, less is often more. The goal is refinement – patients still look like themselves, just fresher.”
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON EYE CONCERNS YOU SEE IN CLINIC?
“Crepey skin is one of the most common, often starting surprisingly early, even in patients in their late twenties or thirties. People notice makeup settling into fine lines, which actually makes things look worse.
“Patients also come in saying they look tired, noticing laxity around the eyes, or feeling heaviness in the upper lids. Often toxin isn’t addressing these concerns anymore because the lines are no longer muscular – they’re due to skin quality and laxity. That distinction is crucial, because once you’re dealing with significant excess skin, you’re moving into surgical territory.”
WHY HAS DEMAND FOR NON-SURGICAL BLEPHAROPLASTY GROWN SO QUICKLY?
“Patients want natural, subtle improvement without the downtime, cost or fear associated with surgery, especially around the eyes. There’s also been a wider shift in aesthetics towards skin quality rather than chasing lines or adding volume.
“Many patients don’t want dramatic change. They want to look refreshed, not ‘done’. Non-surgical options allow gradual improvement, and surgery remains an option later if needed. Importantly, surgery doesn’t improve skin quality, which is why CO2 resurfacing is often combined with surgical blephs anyway.”
HOW DOES SMARTXIDE BLEPH WORK?
“SmartXide Bleph from Lynton uses fractional CO2 laser – the gold standard for skin resurfacing – specifically adapted for the periorbital area. Historically, CO2 was associated with extreme downtime, but DEKA’s advanced pulse patterns allow us to reduce recovery to around a week or less.
“The laser creates fractional columns in the skin, resurfacing the top layers while stimulating collagen. The heat also causes collagen contraction, which produces a tightening effect – something I’ve never been able to achieve with injectables. I describe it to patients as a real-life ‘airbrushed’ effect around the eyes.”
WHAT RESULTS ARE YOU SEEING IN PRACTICE?
“These are honestly the best non-surgical rejuvenation results I’ve seen in nearly a decade in aesthetics. We’re treating fine lines, texture and crepiness that simply don’t respond to toxin or filler.
“What’s surprised me most is the tightening, particularly in patients with under-eye bunching or upper lid heaviness. Some results are comparable to surgical outcomes, but still look natural because we’re just improving the patient’s own skin.
“Downtime typically involves swelling for a couple of days, followed by redness. By day six or seven, most patients can wear tinted SPF and go about their lives. Early results appear within a week, with continued improvement over three months as collagen regenerates.”
HOW IMPORTANT ARE TECHNOLOGY AND TRAINING WHEN WORKING IN THIS AREA?
“Absolutely essential. CO2 is a powerful tool – used well it produces beautiful results, used poorly it can cause complications. Training is about understanding tissue response, patient selection, preparation and aftercare.
“Lynton’s support has been key, from hands-on guidance to advanced training with DEKA in Milan. Even now, with extensive experience, there’s always more to refine, and having that ongoing manufacturer support makes a huge difference.”
