CRAFTING NATURAL-LOOKING, kissable lips

In a fascinating masterclass on Friday morning, Dr MJ Rowland-Warmann gave a talk called Crafting Natural Looking Kissable Lips: Complementing Restylane Kysse with ultrasound technology.

A former dentist, Dr Rowland-Warmann is the lead clinician at Smile Works in Liverpool, which she co-founded with her husband and where she has gained a reputation over the past decade for her meticulous approach to patient safety. She firmly believes the aesthetic industry will only be truly successful when it is safe, and explained the steps she always takes to ensure predictable and natural-looking results using Galderma products.

“Gone are the days of extreme results,” she said. “Now patients want natural, kissable lips and Galderma gives unmatched precision. I feel pretty comfortable placing the filler subcutaneously.”

ACHIEVING OPTIMAL RESULTS

She kicked off the talk by introducing a case study of her 42-year-old patient Clare, whose aim was not simply beautification, she wanted to improve volume and make her mouth look more youthful too. Dr Rowland-Warmann always begins every consultation using her Lip Assessment scale which measures shape in terms of projection, volume and contour.

“The key to great results starts with great assessments,” she explained. “Patients aren’t just walking lips, we must assess the whole face, symmetry, and shape to score how great the need is.

“I start by assessing proportions; most people prefer a one-to-one ratio, but the perfect proportion is where science meets aesthetics. Clare’s upper lip volume is good, but her lower lip volume is thin laterally, which makes it appear pointed. If you take into account the lip projection, or how much the lips stick out, the volume and contour show the mid face can appear a bit flat which has an impact on the lip due to underlying bone support.

“The profile and front view tell us two different stories. Lips are never symmetrical; we are human and that is normal. Overall, Clare has limited issues with symmetry, her perioral area is unremarkable, and not her concern.”

Dr Rowland-Warmann completed Clare’s lip assessment by looking at the length of her labial artery, which takes a snaking path into the layer underneath the muscle, and said: “I will plan to inject in the sub-cutaneous to keep away from the artery. I really love this approach; it helps with the patient’s desires and gives a measured shape.”

But before she went ahead and started to treat Clare’s lips, they discussed which product would be most suitable to use. She went on to explain: “The injection zone is the dry red lip area but I’m not reinventing the wheel here, it is linear threading and Restylane Kysse is a dream to inject into the body of the lip because it puts more red on display, plumps volume and improves shape.”

Moving on to explain how she injected the lower lip she said: “I feel so confident injecting here too. I wanted to give more shape and plumpness. To balance proportions, I stay within the red of the lip to create volume.

“Restylane Kysse is smooth and doesn’t come out all lumpy. Products that are aggressive need vigorous post-treatment manipulation, but Restylane Kysse doesn’t, which generates safer results. We can use simple techniques to give you confidence, and using the best products allows you to fully focus on the treatment without having horrible intrusive thoughts.”

To finish the treatment, Dr Rowland-Warmann explained that she placed a couple more tiny micro-droplets near Clare’s Cupid’s Bow, adding: “With Restylane Kysse, the results are astounding. I used to quest for new techniques, but I don’t need crazy techniques when these results are just safer and better.”

Clare’s post-operative scan showed the labial artery was still intact, symmetry had improved, and it had not affected her expression: “This has seamlessly improved appearance, but doesn’t affect mobility. Getting lip augmentation right is truly an art, and with Restylane Kysse and ultrasounds, it can be even more predictable.

“It’s subtle, but subtle is the new dramatic.”
