High-tech facials: SQT Bio Microneedling
Contributing reporter Kezia Parkins reviews the new SQT Bio Microneedling treatment at Élan Laser Clinics on Portman Square
THE LOWDOWN
The new no-needle biomicroneedling facial from SQT uses small needlelike anatomical structures occurring in organisms called spicules to stimulate the dermis and prompt microcirculation. The Spongilla spicules, which have been used for centuries in skincare, are sourced from a freshwater sponge lake in Dong jang China and are 100% natural and vegan.
According to SQT, these siliceous biomicroneedles effectively deliver active ingredients to the dermis while also activating the basal skin cells. The liquid treatment inserts up to five million Spongilla spicules into the skin in just five minutes, to treat acne, pigmentation, wrinkles, and more.
THE EXPERIENCE
I was very excited to try this new facial. I have had a lot of microneedling treatments for this column, but this was the first to not involve actual needles.
Looking at the glass vial that contains the minute shards, you would think you were looking at a muddy powder. Rebecca Morton, senior therapist at Élan Laser Clinics, explained that, under a microscope, you would be able to see sharp crystal rod-like structures. The powder was then mixed and shaken up with a serum to suit my skin concerns.
After a thorough cleanse, the spicule solution was massaged gently into my face. It felt a bit like sandpaper being rubbed onto mild sunburn.
The shards drive themselves down into the basal layer of the skin, creating millions of microchannels, and enhancing the production of collagen and elastin while delivering vital nutrients.
The shards then apparently stay in your face until they fall out, but looking at me, you would never know.
THE VERDICT
With no blood, little to no redness and no intimidating device, this treatment couldn’t be further from your typical microneedling treatment.
After spending the last year intermittently being pricked by microneedles in the quest for glassy glowing skin, something natural and less sharp was a welcome relief. As warned, I felt the tiny shards within my skin for a few days which was mildly uncomfortable, but, within a week, my complexion was significantly improved and incredibly smooth and my skin tone was a lot more even. My skin absorbed serum more efficiently and the hyperpigmentation on my cheeks from regular hormonal breakouts looked reduced.
THE BUSINESS BENEFITS
Rather than taking the standard time of 28 days to see a result, SQT Bio Microneedling will have your clients noticing a change within a week — I know I did. This is also a great alternative for any patients who have avoided microneedling due to needle phobia.
