Acne scarring results from the inflammation of acne blemishes. The acne pore swells, and a breakdown occurs in the wall of the pore. While some acne blemishes are small and shallow and heal quickly, sometimes, deeperscarring can occur, which can, in turn, greatly impact a patient’s self-esteem.

Fortunately, there are now a plethora of treatment options that have resulted from the requirement to treat various acne scartypes, the variability of responses noted in various skin types, and the increasing popularity of minimally invasive modalities.

An incredibly effective treatment option that’s suitable forthe vast majority of my patients is radiofrequency microneedling with Lutronic Genius RF. Indeed, in a 2014 study1, radiofrequency (RF) microneedling was shown to improve acne scars, and a small 2017 study 2found similar results. Within this write-up, I will talk through the benefits ofusing Lutronic Genius RF to effectively reduce the appearance of acne scarring and improve a patient's quality of life. It is also important to note the additional benefits of this treatment, which include skin tightening and an improvement in skin texture and pore size, according to a 2020 case report. 3

PATIENT ASSESSMENT

The patient had been prescribed antibiotics, which treated the acne, but she was left with a significant amount of scarring. This impacted her self-esteem greatly.

During consultation, we discussed the treatment options available to her, however, the Lutronic Genius RF seemed to offer the best treatment protocol for the patient.

Lutronic Genius is an intelligent radiofrequency technology that delivers thermal energy through microneedles into the dermis of the skin, to stimulate collagen production for impressive long-lasting results, without surgical downtime.

The system senses the quality of the patient's skin and treatment can be adjusted for a great outcome. With intelligent 3D volumisation, a real feedback control system and precise coagulation, we can visibly improve skin texture, wrinkles and skin laxity.

TREATMENT PROTOCOL

Firstly, I Introduced the patient to a medicalgrade skincare routine. We then completed two sessions of Lutronic Genius RF and two sessions of Lase MD Ultra.

The patient was able to resume daily activities immediately aftertreatment and only experienced minorredness and swelling.

The patient will then revisit the clinic for a further course of treatment with LaseMD Ultra.

The patient said, “Since having the Lutronic Genius RF and LaseMD treatment, my skin has been transformed. I can look in the mirror again and have finally got the confidence to go out and enjoy life. People have made so many positive comments saying that I look really well and that my skin looks healthy as if I've been on holiday. They often comment that I look a lot younger as well.”
