CELLSTORY LIQUID MICRONEEDLING

Former editor, Anna Dobbie visits Anel Lamine to try the much-hyped bio-microneedling facial from Cellstory

THE LOWDOWN

Cellstory's bio-microneedling facial is rooted in a fascinating blend of microneedling and advanced biomimetic science. It combines micro-infusion of spicule-based serums with targeted skin stimulation to harness the body's regenerative response.

For the unfamiliar, spicules are essentially minute, needle-like structures derived from marine sponges or synthetically replicated to mimic their high surface area and bio-affinity. They can act as micro-conduits, gently disrupting the stratum corneum to promote absorption of potent actives – anything from growth factors to peptides or hyaluronic acid. As skin naturally responds to this controlled micro-wounding, it creates a cascade: increased fibroblast activity, collagen and elastin synthesis, and enhanced skin turnover. Thanks to their shape and size, the magic lies in how these spicules allow deeper, more even penetration of treatments without the discomfort or downtime of deeper procedures like traditional needling or harsh chemical peels.

A cocktail containing nourishing peptides and calming botanicals can complement the spicules to boost barrier repair while provoking a mild healing response. The goal? Smoother texture, brightness, and a fresh, dewy glow, without the heavier peeling or riskier energy-based modalities.

THE EXPERIENCE

Having worked in Wimbledon for almost three years, I was amazed to discover Lamine's practice is located directly opposite the Aesthetic Medicine offices. After cleansing and mild numbing, the spicule serum was applied in sections: cheek, forehead, chin, using either a specialised stamp or micro-roller technique under light pressure. It felt like a cascade of tiny prickles, more akin to kissing someone with a five o'clock shadow than being pricked with acupuncture needles.

Lamine's touch was precise and measured, never harsh. However, I could feel it working its magic on my skin, although the sensation was more tingly than painful. Then came the cooling layer: a calming jelly infused with aloe and niacinamide, applied generously to calm and hydrate, and a touch of magnesium for extra relief.

Lamine spent about 10 minutes cleansing, followed by 10 more on problem areas, 20 minutes for full-face spicule application, 10 minutes of cooling and gentle massage, and finishing touches including SPF and hydrating mist. With Lamine's gentle guidance and friendly conversation throughout, the whole experience clocked in at about an hour from start to finish. She made sure I was comfortable at every step, pausing to check reactions, adjust pressure, and narrate what was happening while coaching me through the slightly prickly parts. It made the experience feel both relaxed and rejuvenating.

THE VERDICT

Once the numbing wore off, I noticed my face was a vivid cranberry shade. It stayed red for the first 48 hours, with a tingly, tender quality that was sensitive to touch, especially around the cheeks and under-eye area. Going to bed that night, I felt like I was sunburnt – red, sensitive, and slightly swollen in places.

However, by day three, the redness subsided. What emerged was a surface that looked polished and smooth – pores appeared smaller, fine lines softened with a natural freshness. By day four and five, people started noticing. First, a friend asked, "What have you had done?" Then, a colleague thought I'd changed my skincare routine. While there were a few days of looking like an angry tomato, it was totally worth it. My complexion was brighter, more even toned, and glowed well beyond that typical 'post-facial pink'. The texture felt baby soft. For anyone worried about harsh peeling or wary of aggressive lasers, this treatment has powerful results that respect the skin's surface.

To sum up: yes, initial redness is real. Yes, you're tender for a couple of days. But, then – wow. Compliments, glow, confidence. The balance between scientific potency and gentle sensorial experience is where Cellstory's spicule treatment, under Lamine's hand, really shines. The few red days were entirely eclipsed by weeks of radiant, "what-have-you-been-using?" glow.

This facial is for anyone considering refreshing their complexion without the downtime or intensity of aggressive treatments. Under a skilled, informed practitioner like Lamine, the Cellstory spicule facial keeps the science front and centre, with a glowing result.
