More than one third of Brits have experienced skin issues linked to air pollution
New research conducted by Westfield’s How We Shop platform unveiled the concerning reality that over a third (38%) of Britons believe they have experienced skin issues due to air pollution, with prevalent issues including dryness (54%), increased dirtiness (45%), blemishes (21%), and early signs of ageing (20%).
Over 70% have concerns about the detrimental effects of air pollution on their skin and, as cities grapple with increasing pollution levels, it’s no surprise that skin health is a growing concern.
More than half of Britons credit their heightened understanding of how air pollution affects the skin to improved environmental education.
BAAPS audit reports 16% decrease in procedures
The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), the UK’s only organisation solely dedicated to advancing safety, innovation, and excellence in cosmetic surgery, has released its annual audit.
According to the new figures, 25,972 surgical procedures took place in 2023, a 16% fall from 2022.
Women had 93% of all cosmetic procedures in 2023. The five most popular procedures for women were breast augmentation (down 26%), breast reduction (down 17%), abdominoplasty, also known as the tummy tuck (down 19%) blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery (up 1%) and liposuction (down 17%). Face and neck lift surgery increased in popularity to sixth place in 2023.
Men had 7% of all cosmetic surgery procedures, a fall of 20% from 2022. The five most popular procedures among men were rhinoplasty (down 1%), blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery (down 9%) chest reduction (down 29%), liposuction (down 36%) and otoplasty/ear correction (down 22%).
Two-thirds of TikTok influencers are making skincare mistakes
Booking software Fresha has identified the most common skincare mistakes made by TikTok creators across 100 of the most-viewed videos tagged #GRWM (get ready with me) and #skincareroutine.
The most common issue across skincare routines was pulling on the skin too harshly when applying products, with 60% of creators found guilty of this. The second-most prevalent skincare mistake was skipping essential steps or not using products in the correct order, with more than half (54%) of creators caught doing so. The product most of these creators skipped was toner, while almost as many missed cleanser.
Rounding out the top three most common skincare mistakes is not applying products to the chest or neck alongside the face, with just as many (54%) influencers skipping this.
Lynton opens new training facility in London
Aesthetics device manufacturer Lynton has announced the opening of its new training site in London, as it reaffirms its commitment to providing high-quality accredited training programmes.
The new facility is located at London’s Edition Clinic in Wimbledon, just a two-minute walk from the station. The grounds have been fitted with multiple treatment rooms and spacious training areas, which provide the optimum environment for handson learning and skill development.
The first training courses on offer at the London facility are the Level 4 VTCT Diploma in Hair Reduction and Skin Rejuvenation using Laser and IPL.
US searches for ‘plastic surgery’ surge 72% after Met Gala
A new Google Trends search analysis has revealed that searches for ‘plastic surgery’ soared by 72% across the US, less than 24 hours after the Met Gala 2024 on May 6.
The analysis, conducted by personal health consultants TruMe Labs, was determined using the search terms ‘plastic surgery’ and ‘mommy makeover’. The research established the US average search rate over the previous thirty days, and compared percentage increases at peak rates, to show the influence of the Met Gala.
Worldwide, the terms have seen a slight increase, particularly ‘mommy makeover’ which saw a slight peak on May 6. In the UK, ‘plastic surgery’ and ‘mummy makeover’ haven’t seen a particular increase in searches since the Gala, with interest staying much the same.
Evolus expands in the UK and Ireland with two new appointments
Evolus has announced the appointment of two new roles that will support the growth of the UK and Irish business.
Julia Hart joins as medical affairs clinician, reporting to Flavio Azank, head of medical affairs for Evolus International.
She will be providing medical support to UK customers and brings first-hand knowledge based on running her own aesthetic clinic, Julia Hart Skin Clinic. Before this, Hart had a distinguished career as a neonatal nurse in the NHS.
Dallas Waltham, who was previously EMEA brand and experience marketing manager for Hydrafacial, has also joined as UK sales programme coordinator. Waltham will report to Suse Alexander, Evolus UK and Ireland general manager, and will be responsible for managing and coordinating sales processes and events.
Private hospitals could save £8,572 by switching water suppliers
New research by Clearsight Energy has highlighted the business sectors that could benefit most from switching water suppliers since the deregulation of England’s water market in 2017.
With private hospitals among those set to save the most, along with farms and restaurants, many businesses have yet to capitalise on this opportunity. Additionally, the study sheds light on potential savings for sectors ranging from beauty salons to cinemas, illustrating the widespread opportunities for cost reduction.
“This study highlights a significant opportunity for businesses across England to reassess their water supply choices,” stated a spokesperson from Clearsight Energy.
Lutronic UK announces new training courses
Manufacturer of medical lasers for aesthetic, visual, and surgical applications, Lutronic UK, has announced a series of accredited training courses to be conducted at its George Street office.
The courses will be led by industry veteran Kevin Williams, who joined the Lutronic team on March 1.
The training courses, which will be co-led by Lutronic’s practice development manager and clinical trainer, Samantha Strydom, cover a range of topics including laser fundamentals, hair removal, skin rejuvenation, combination therapy, vascular and pigmentation treatments, as well as advanced techniques in fractionated water absorption lasers.
Aesthetic Medical Partnership takes over UKI distribution of Cellenis PRP
Aesthetic Medical Partnership (AMP) will be taking over the distribution of Cellenis Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) in the UK and Ireland from Medira.
The distribution deal began on April 1, and will see Cellenis PRP join AMP’s existing biologics portfolio, which includes the plant-derived ExtraCellular Nano Complex system, EXO|E for skin and DE|RIVE for scalp and hair. The company will also spearhead the UK launch of Cellenis PRP DermaFiller – a fully autologous regenerative volumiser – to the UK market in the coming months, further developing its focus on the growing regenerative area of aesthetic medicine.
Cutera partners with MATA to offer Ofqual regulated level 4 training

The latest consumer spending figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have revealed that UK households spent a record £32.3bn on health products and services in 2023, up £2.5bn (8.3%) over 2022’s £29.8bn.
Last year, Brits spent £8.6 billion on pharmaceutical products such as medicines, vaccines and vitamins, up from 2022’s £7.9 billion, as well as £4.2 billion on consultations with doctors and specialists and £4 billion on dentists and hygienists. From May 1, NHS prescriptions rose from £9.65 to £9.90 per item and the 12-month prescription prepayment certificate increased from £111.60 to £114.50.

The British Association of Dermatologists is urging the public to learn the signs of non-melanoma skin cancer, as recent research shows that non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSCs) deaths are on track to overtake melanoma deaths in England and Scotland for the first time.
Currently the most common type of cancers in the UK, NMSCs have a high survival rate in comparison to melanoma, but awareness of these cancers is lower. However, recently published research suggests that based on current trends, the number of NMSC deaths will overtake melanoma deaths in years to come, due to the number of people affected.
