What’s the problem with lasers and skin of colour?
“The more heat that is applied to a darker skin tone during energy-based treatments, the higher the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). So, while you may be addressing a certain skin concern, the final result may be compromised by PIH. In the past, treating skin of colour with an ablative laser was not possible due to the high pigment content in the skin – putting high energy into the skin would cause excessive heating to the cells, risking PIH.”
How does UltraClear make treating skin of colour possible?
“The UltraClear laser delivers cold fractional ablation and dialled-in coagulation at the same time and at the same location. This means that less heat is put into the skin with this treatment, minimising complications and risks associated with other resurfacing lasers.
“UltraClear deposits less thermal energy, which is what usually causes PIH. As a comparison, with CO2 laser emission, 40% of the energy ablates (removes the top layer of the skin) and 60% is unwanted thermal energy. Contrary, with UltraClear, 95% of the energy ablates and just 5% is thermal energy, which is why it’s called ‘cold’ ablative, and why it hurts less and heals faster. By reducing the amount of heat applied into the skin it therefore allows skin of colour to be treated safely with a fractional laser for the first time.”
