Cosmetic doctor Dr Vincent Wong shares a male jawline filler case study

Before and after

DR VINCENT WONG

Dr Vincent Wong is trained in advanced non-surgical cosmetic treatments and is a specialist in facial balancing and harmony. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Medicine (First Class Honours) from the University of St Andrews and a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Aberdeen. In addition, he also specialises in feminisation and masculinisation of faces within the LGBTQ+ community.

CONSULTATION

This patient was 28 when he came to me for a consultation. He wanted a wider jawline to make his face look more masculine. He told me he had hyaluronic acid fillers previously and loved the result, but as he leads a very active lifestyle as a dancer and regular gym-goer, he found these hadn’t lasted long. This is because the more active a person is, the higher their metabolism rate. Being overly active will break down hyaluronic acid fillers faster. After consultation, we decided to go for Ellansé L, a collagen-stimulating filler made of PCL microspheres in a CMC-based carrier gel.

TREATMENT

A total of 2ml was injected at three points: at the angle of mandible, the ramus and along the jawline. I injected deeper on to the bone to prevent any risks of lumpiness given the previous HA filler, but it was done eight months previously so there wasn’t a complication-related risk. When approaching jawline treatment on men, we aim to bring out the jawline as much as we can to make the face more masculine; the injection point is on the angle of the mandible. For women, my injection point starts 1cm above and 1cm lateral to the angle of the mandible so that it provides a volumised and lifted look without masculinising the face.

RESULTS

The patient was very happy with the increased definition and widening effect on his jawline. He wanted something that would last a lot longer than his previous HA fillers, and the results with Ellansé will last him for three years, making it the perfect choice. The product is made up of spheres within which is contained long chains of polycaprolactone (one of the strongest collagen stimulators on the market). As the chains are longer in Ellansé L compared to Ellansé S and Ellansé M, it takes longer for the body to break these chains down. The process of breaking down polycaprolactone results in production of Type 1 and Type 3 collagen.
