A new handpiece for Deka’s Onda device treats both excess fat and lax skin in the submental area
Laser manufacturer Lynton Lasers has introduced a new handpiece for Onda, the bodysculpting device it distributes in the UK for Italian manufacturer Deka. The new Smart Handpiece is designed to treat the submental area, which wasn’t previously possible with Onda. As one of the most requested yet most challenging areas to treat, the submental or “double chin” area can incorporate both excess fat and lax skin, often requiring treatment with two separate technologies to address each concern.
Onda’s submental handpiece aims to solve this problem with Coolwaves technology; a specific, controlled frequency on the microwave spectrum of 2.45GHz that bypasses the uppermost layers of tissue to deliver more energy to the subcutaneous fat cells to achieve cell death, while simultaneously stimulating cellular metabolic processes and collagen production to tighten the skin. Coolwaves also means a more comfortable treatment for patients, says Lynton, as surface tissue heating is reduced. Practitioners can use the handpiece to guide the electromagnetic field to the lipocytes in order to destroy fat cells in the submental region while also smoothing, sculpting and tightening the neck tissue.
Plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgeon Dr Veerle Rotsaert has begun incorporating the Onda submental handpiece into her surgical practice. She says: “This is such a good adjunct to liposuction and fat grafting in the submental area. After liposuction sometimes people are left with some irregularities in skin quality and Onda works very well on this; when we don’t see as much skin retraction as we would have wished after liposuction.” She says it’s also a good alternative for those who are scared to undergo surgery or can’t have it for medical reasons, or for those who only have a small amount of submental fullness they can’t get rid of but which doesn’t warrant undergoing liposuction.
Aesthetic therapist Lenka Anthony, who works alongside Dr Rotsaert at Tempus Belgravia in London, shares that in clinic, submental treatment with Onda is also often combined with injectables to enhance the chin and jawline. “Some of the heat will radiate outwards through the skin, which causes a boost in collagen and elastin production, tightening and lifting,” she says, providing the perfect foundation for definition with filler.
