Treatment review: polynucleotides and Perfect Peel
Editor Anna Dobbie visits Waterhouse Young clinic to rejuvenate her skin with a popular protocol
THE LOWDOWN
Mastelli Plinest is made from DNA fragments extracted from Italian trout using the brand’s patented extraction and purification process. The polynucleotide ingredient increases fibroblast growth and vitality, helping stimulate collagen fibres production and tissue repair. They increase 60% of collagen I and III and 35% of fibronectin production, which is a connective tissue that helps to firm the skin and aid in the wound healing process. Mastelli Newest can be used on the face, neck and décolletage and combines highly purified polynucleotide technology, known as PN-HPT, with non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid for additional hydration and mannitol. The mannitol has been clinically proven to reduce the degradation of the hyaluronic acid by 34%. Together, the ingredients in Newest have the power to regenerate fibroblasts, leading to increased collagen and elastin production, thanks to the PN-HPT, while the hyaluronic acid hydrates and revolumises the skin. Newest is an excellent treatment option for acne, scarring, and more significant levels of skin damage and ageing. One study showed that skin elasticity improved by 39.6%, skin brightness was enhanced by 51.1% and wrinkles and skin roughness declined by 17.1% after three treatments with the product.
The Perfect Peel is a medical grade chemical peel with glutathione for all skin types, as well as a synergistic blend of five acids, vitamins, minerals and super antioxidant, which also aims to rejuvenate skin, leaving it looking younger and healthier.
THE EXPERIENCE
Following a consultation with Dr Paris Acharya where she listened to my skin concerns and used a Visia scanner to analyse my face, she determined that my skin would benefit from three polynucleotide treatments, followed by a Perfect Peel. I had two treatments with Plinest spaced one month apart, followed by a third with Newest. She explained the difference between Plinest and Newest is hyaluronic acid for increased hydration and radiance and to help revolumise skin. Dr Acharya chose to use Newest for my last appointment, as I had been trialling some new skincare which had caused dryness and irritation, so she felt I would benefit from the added hydration. Each session took around 20 minutes and was slightly spicy but not painful, with no downtime.
Approximately a month later, I returned to Waterhouse Young, where Dr You-Jin Chang administered a medium-depth Perfect Peel to maximise results. “Together, they work synergistically to deeply rejuvenate skin,” said Dr Chang. “It is an amazing combination treatment offering and our most potent treatment for rejuvenating your skin. It helps improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, texture concerns and pigmentation issue, while giving your skin the ultimate glow.” Although the peel itself only took twenty minutes to administer, the downtime was a week, during which I was unable to wear makeup and had large flakes of my skin peeling off. Dr Chang talked me through the post care and arranged a final visit to check on my skin’s progress.
THE VERDICT
Although the final Visia scan showed little difference from the initial pictures, my skin felt noticeably clearer, especially directly after the Perfect Peel. However, this isn’t a treatment for the fainthearted as the down time is significant and can make you feel very self-conscious.
