Aesthetic Medicine advertising manager Lisa Merrigan reviews a Nordlys Light and Bright treatment at the Real You Clinic with Dr Kathryn Taylor-Barnes

THE LOWDOWN

The Nordlys by Candela is a state-of-the-art device that utilises multiple technologies (intense pulsed light (IPL), Frax 1550 and Frax 1940) to address conditions such as skin texture, vascular lesions, and ageing skin.

Frax 1550 and Frax 1940 skin resurfacing smoothes texture and rejuvenates sun damaged skin, while IPL laser can be used to treat port wine stains, unsightly leg veins, broken capillaries, and calm redness, as well as address dark spots, freckles, age spots, uneven pigmentation, and diffuse redness.

THE EXPERIENCE

I went to the beautiful Real You Clinic in St Margarets, where I was welcomed by the equally lovely Dr Kathryn Taylor-Barnes. A modern, medical-grade clinic, Real You advocates fully understanding every client’s medical history and concerns. As a fully qualified GP for 27 years with nearly 20 years in aesthetics under her belt, Dr Taylor-Barnes made me feel at complete ease with her experience and knowledge.

At the age of 46 and with good skin, I consider myself lucky. However, due to hormones, I am now seeing a difference in my skin tone and Dr Taylor-Barnes’ advice was to go for the Nordlys Light and Bright treatment by Candela.

First, she talked me through exactly what was going to happen and applied some numbing cream. The treatment combines two advanced technologies found in the Nordlys system. The IPL felt like a gentle elastic band flicking over my face and, once this 10-minute procedure was done, it was time for the Frax laser. It works by delivering very small, controlled bursts of heat energy, which allows the pulse to be set at the appropriate width and depth. As it rolled across my skin, it felt surprisingly comforting and warm as it delivered its collagen-stimulating heat energy.

THE VERDICT

Immediately after treatment, I was a little pink and my skin felt warm to the touch but looked fine. I was advised to not wash my face for 24 hours. The following day my skin appeared dry and flaky, but Dr Taylor-Barnes said this was normal. After a few days following the skincare routine Dr Taylor-Barnes had given to me, I saw a huge improvement and my skin was nearly flake-free. Day seven was the day I saw my brand new, clear complexion!

One of the main reasons I wanted to try this treatment was because it’s relatively low maintenance and the results can be very long-lasting. Two months on, I am enjoying seeing the amazing results it has provided. Several people have commented on how well I am looking. I highly recommend it!
