High-tech facials: Byonik

THE LOWDOWN

On a sunny afternoon, I was invited back to the gorgeous rose quartz haven that is the Lisa Franklin Clinic to try the Byonik Pulse Triggered Laser. Byonik is an innovative device aimed at healing and protecting the skin by upping its critical moisture levels, thus promoting optimal barrier and regenerative function. The device helps repair skin at a cellular level and locks in hydration at the same time to deliver an immediate anti-ageing response.

THE EXPERIENCE

After last month’s treatment with the Potenza radiofrequency micro-needling (RFM) device, my skin has been quite problematic. My forehead was dry and I was experiencing breakouts on my cheeks and chin. While these effects are to be expected after such a treatment, they left me feeling unlike myself.

I explained this to my beauty therapist Candice during our consultation, before I snuggled into a luxurious heated bed that immediately relaxed all my muscles.

I was a bit surprised to be hooked up to a finger oximeter after a thorough cleanse, but Candice explained this was so the pulse-triggered laser could beam a special hyaluronic acid gel into my skin in tandem with my heartbeat. The laser shoots just before each beat to push the hyaluronic acid into each cell, when the osmosis rate is at its best, allowing the skin to soak it all up.

After examining my skin, she confirmed it was very dehydrated and that the Byonik would help.

The Byonik HA gels contain antioxidant ingredients like algae and have been bioengineered, broken down and dehydrated to be absorbed at a deeper level to aid the regeneration of the skin barrier.

The gels come in different strengths and, as my skin was so thirsty, it would be best to apply multiple layers of the lower strength gel.

The Byonix laser combines two wavelengths, red light (658nm) and near-infrared light (806nm) which are non-invasive and non-ablative to the skin. Red light helps boost collagen generation and reduce bacteria, while near-infrared light enhances the detoxification of collagen and elastic fibres, as well as boosting the metabolism of the epidermal cells. The fusion of this technology with the ingredients from the gel makes for a truly hydrating and anti-ageing experience.

THE VERDICT

This treatment was a godsend after the side effects of deeper RFM. Not only was my skin immediately more hydrated and plump after treatment, but, in the weeks following, it was better able to absorb the moisture from my routine, aiding in its recovery.The treatment itself was relaxing and enjoyable, completely painless and had no downtime.

It felt great to be actively doing something completely non-invasive and nourishing to help my skin, after thoroughly putting it through its paces for the sake of curiosity, my love of beauty, and this column!
