Editor Anna Dobbie visits Dr Lorenzo Garagnani at SE1 Medical Aesthetics London to find out why hand treatments are in vogue

Founded in 2021, Bermondsey’s SE1 Medical Aesthetics has become a London hub for hand rejuvenation. Founder and orthopaedic hand surgeon and aesthetic doctor Dr Lorenzo Garagnani shares the clinic’s remarkable journey and distinctive approach to combination treatments.

A FAMILY VISION BROUGHT TO LIFE

SE1 Medical Aesthetics opened its doors a mere two years ago and the timing couldn’t have been more poignant, as it marked the end of lockdown. The clinic, born from a family vision, emerged from an empty room, and transformed into a space that would embody inclusivity and artistry.

Dr Garagnani, and his wife, managing director Emma Costello, embarked on an ambitious project to create their dream clinic. Every detail, from the choice of tiles to the overall design, was designed by the couple, ensuring that SE1 Medical Aesthetics would be a space that welcomed all patients regardless of gender. Transcending the typical blues and pinks commonly associated with the aesthetics industry, SE1’s design is all-encompassing and inclusive, with the intention of making every patient feel comfortable, welcomed, and valued.

Unlike most aesthetic practices, the clinic attracts a diverse demographic, mainly over 35 and a nearly equal split of male and female clientele.

“We pride ourselves on promoting a pro-age revolution, striving to help patients achieve their healthiest, most vibrant selves,” says Costello. “Instead of encouraging unrealistic expectations of turning back the clock, the clinic focuses on rejuvenation, hydration, and achieving a natural, radiant glow, with an emphasis on enhancing natural beauty.”

SCIENCE-BACKED TREATMENTS

The clinic offers a wide array of treatments designed to cater to the unique needs of each patient, starting with facial analysis using cutting-edge technology from Opatra. “It’s good to have before and after images for patients going for a series of treatments,” says Dr Garagnani. “Who cares what the beginning is as long as the after is better? it’s a good tool to have to prove that the ‘after’ is better than the ‘before’, not just visually, but also what’s going on underneath.”

The clinic’s offerings span a spectrum of non-surgical procedures, including microneedling, polynucleotides, mesotherapy, toxins, fillers, and skin boosters, aiming to provide patients with results that are not only effective but also sustainable and long-lasting.

However, SE1 Medical Aesthetics’ specialisation in hand rejuvenation is particularly notable. Dr Garagnani, renowned for his expertise in this field, has been at the forefront of developing safer and more anatomically precise techniques that not only address aesthetic concerns but also ensure optimal functional improvement.

“Hand rejuvenation is a nuanced and intricate field that requires an in-depth understanding of anatomy,” says Dr Garagnani, who has not only mastered this knowledge but also taken the initiative to educate others, as the driving force behind SE1’s masterclasses on hand rejuvenation. These masterclasses are intentionally kept small, with only three participants, ensuring a highly personalised learning environment, and are for healthcare professionals with prior injection experience, emphasising the importance of safety and anatomical precision. The course curriculum includes a strong theoretical foundation, followed by hands-on practice under the guidance of Dr Garagnani himself.

A COMMITMENT TO SAFETY AND INNOVATION

Dr Garagnani’s dedication to safety and innovation is evident in his approach to hand rejuvenation. He has authored a forthcoming paper in the Official Journal of the International Union of Aesthetic Medicine, shedding light on potential complications and anatomically guided procedures, with his research poised to significantly impact the field by promoting safer and more effective practices.

Dr Garagnani acknowledges that hand rejuvenation is a relatively underexplored area in aesthetics, yet it is a rapidly growing field: “My anatomically based approach represents a departure from conventional injection techniques, which often lack precision and carry higher risks. By focusing on anatomy, I aim to redefine how hand rejuvenation is approached, with safety and efficacy at the forefront.” The masterclass curriculum is comprehensive, encompassing both theory and practical components.

Participants gain a deep understanding of the anatomical nuances of the hand and the intricacies of aesthetic improvement. Dr Garagnani provides detailed demonstrations before participants can practice under his expert supervision.

TIPS FOR HAND HEALTH

In addition to their clinical work, the SE1 Medical Aesthetics team emphasise the importance of maintaining hand health. Good hydration, a balanced diet rich in collagen-boosting nutrients, and a healthy lifestyle all contribute to the overall appearance of the hands. Dr Garagnani advises against smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, as these habits can negatively impact hand health and appearance.

Furthermore, he reminds individuals to extend their sun protection practices to the backs of their hands: “Often overlooked, these areas are exposed to harmful UV rays and require equal care and protection. During the pandemic, I also noticed that hand sanitiser, while crucial for safety, had adverse effects on skin health, leading to dryness and other issues.”

THE JOURNEY SO FAR

Originally from Italy, Dr Garagnani sought to combine his interest in reconstructive surgery with aesthetics, ultimately leading him to the world of medical aesthetics. His commitment to both the functional and aesthetic aspects of his profession has been a driving force behind his specialisation in hand rejuvenation. Recognising the interconnectedness of orthopaedic and plastic surgery, Dr Garagnani pursued specialised training to master the intricacies of the human hand, with a focus on a holistic approach to hand rejuvenation.

As Dr Garagnani continued to pursue his passion for aesthetics, he embarked on a four-year postgraduate diploma in aesthetic medicine, further honing his skills. This rigorous journey required him to balance surgical training and aesthetic education. Upon moving to the UK, Dr Garagnani crossed paths with Costello, who shared his passion for aesthetics. Their collaboration led to the inception of SE1 Medical Aesthetics, a fusion of Dr Garagnani’s medical expertise and Emma Costello’s business acumen and aesthetic training.

As well as his NHS work, Dr Garagnani is an honorary reader (associate professor) at King’s College London and Guy’s and St Thomas’ lead for undergraduate medical education in orthopaedics, showcasing his commitment to education and knowledge sharing.
