THE ART AND SCIENCE OF transformation

Editor Anna Dobbie visits Miss Jonquille Chantrey in Cheshire to find out how she integrates her international clinical expertise, creativity and wellness into ØNE Aesthetic Studiø

With over two decades of experience spanning surgery, aesthetics, and wellness, Miss Jonquille Chantrey has seamlessly integrated the art and science of transformation into her work at Cheshire’s ØNE Aesthetic Studiø.

STRONG FOUNDATIONS

Miss Chantrey’s journey into aesthetics was not a straight path. It began with a strong educational foundation, where, through her broad achievements, she earned a full scholarship to a prestigious all-girls school. She excelled in both arts and sciences, with a passion for writing and music. Her academic journey took her to the University of Nottingham to study medicine. There, she earned two degrees in Medicine, Surgery and Medical Sciences. In the latter, she majored in Neuroscience and Psychiatry, focusing on topics such as ADHD and psychopharmacology. This unique combination of creative and scientific interests eventually led her to the operating room, where she found a natural fit in the hands-on, creative nature of surgery. Following the surgical examinations, she was certified by The Royal College of Surgeons of England and progressed in a role as a research plastic surgeon in the UK, Europe and Russia.

Her fascination with the human mind and behaviour began at a young age. “My biggest driver and motivation are helping people to develop, become and understand their most actualised selves,” she explains, “It’s a lifelong process, and I’ve been very privileged to have met so many different cross-sections of society, working over six continents.”

This global perspective has deepened Miss Chantrey’s understanding of the nuances that shape international beauty ideals and individual motivations, contributing to her 360º approach, which she has defined in the five spheres of her “Beauty Mastery” framework: culture, mathematics, artistic elements, technique, and the biological sphere. “This framework helps me approach patient care, writing, and lecturing in a comprehensive and structured manner,” she explains. “It’s about truly understanding the individual, not just the aesthetic goal.” Since designing The Beauty Mastery, she has presented and taught her concepts across the globe, from the Americas to Asia and Australasia.

TRANSITION TO AESTHETICS

Miss Chantrey’s transition from neuroscience and surgery to aesthetic medicine was marked by a desire to combine her medical expertise with her creative instincts. She was headhunted while working in skin science biotech, which opened doors to the aesthetic sector. Her early involvement with Allergan Aesthetics saw her contributing to the development of groundbreaking products like Juvederm Volbella, Volux and Volite. “I was fortunate to be involved in the entire lifecycle of these products, from clinical trials to market launch,” she recalls, explaining how different product design and research deepened her unique understanding of the complexities and potential within the aesthetic market.

She has held an ongoing global leadership role with Allegan Aesthetics, performing live injections at major international conferences, demonstrating her innovative expertise to peers for the last 16 years both sponsored and non-sponsored. This was a period of intense professional growth, allowing her to merge her surgical skills with the artistry required in aesthetic medicine.

DELICATE BALANCE

In 2010, Miss Chantrey opened her Cheshire clinic, ØNE Aesthetic Studiø, allowing her the freedom to uphold her own ethical standards and choose the products and devices she believed in. Located near London and a major international airport, she attracts a diverse patient demographic. “Diversity is not just a buzzword for me; it’s been a fundamental aspect of my practice from the beginning,” she emphasises. She has been a vocal advocate for better representation in clinical studies and campaigns and has long demonstrated commitment to promoting equality and inclusion in the sector.

Miss Chantrey’s dedication to the psychology of aesthetics and vulnerable patient populations has led to groundbreaking research and publications, shedding light on the nuanced and artistic approach required to address their unique needs. “Understanding that every patient is different physically and mentally is at the absolute heart of individuality and has been the underlying theme of all my research throughout my career.”

Miss Chantrey’s focus on individuality is particularly evident in her extensive work with patients with trauma, facial deformities, scarring, ethnic heterogeneity and gender reassignment. “It’s highly complex,” she acknowledges.

“I’ve always attracted a lot of facial deformity patients, through my scarring and wound healing work and I’ve fervently fought for more visibility for them,” she adds. She has published papers on using injectables for scarring and facial deformity to underscore the complexity and individuality of each case, emphasising the need for a nuanced approach that respects each patient’s unique characteristics.

“If you’re just a visual practitioner, without strategy or a deep understanding of the dynamic anatomy, that will deliver average results, as will an uncreative injection proforma on repeat for every patient. Beyond beautification and attractiveness, I help a lot of my patients with their broader quality of life, such as speech, muscular expression and self-confidence, so I need to be able to balance high level art and science.”

INSPIRED DESIGN

The delicate balance of functionality and aesthetics is also reflected in the design of Miss Chantrey’s clinic, which seamlessly integrates the clinical and creative aspects of her practice. “The clinic features artwork from various patients and artists, representing different aspects of transformation and resilience,” she explains, “The design reflects the belief in individual expression and the transformative power of aesthetics.” This unique blend of clinical precision and artistic expression creates a space where patients feel empowered to explore both their inner and outer expressions of beauty.

At the heart of Miss Chantrey’s practice is an original holistic approach that integrates wellness and psychology. ØNE Aesthetic Studiø is designed to reflect the balance between inner and outer beauty, featuring both a clinical side for regenerative and medical wellness procedures and a studio side dedicated to psychological well-being. “Beauty is not simply about what we see on the outside; it’s deeply connected to our inner state,” she explains.

INNOVATION AND IMPACT

Miss Chantrey’s impact extends globally. “I’ve spoken in over 95 countries worldwide, including the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australasia and Middle East,” she shares. “I’ve worked on many research studies, phase two and three clinical trials, including trauma, psychology, wound healing, and keloid scarring and have contributed to bringing many major industry devices, injectables and skincare products to global markets.”

She also supports different educational initiatives, such as the bursary fund at Manchester High School for Girls, where she gives talks on self-acceptance and industry awareness.

She has worked extensively with Dr Zein Obagi in his Los Angeles clinics and on the ZO Skin Health portfolio, as well as other leading skincare and device companies. In her global leadership role with Skinceuticals and L’Oréal she has been actively involved in skin science education and clinical testing of various skincare products and protocols. Having been a principal physician on the global testing board, she launched Skinceutical’s new advanced peptide antiwrinkle serum, P-TIOX and is currently leading the UK advisory board. She is also working on exciting development projects with 3D Lipo. Her industry position allows her to explore varied innovative combination therapies for future public impact.

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP, CHALLENGES AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS

Balancing a busy clinical practice with creative projects and sector leadership is no easy feat, but Miss Chantrey embraces the challenge with enthusiasm. “Staying patient-facing is crucial for me; it keeps me grounded and connected to the core of my practice,” she says. Looking ahead, she plans to continue her work in education, research, and advocacy, aiming to make a positive impact on the field of aesthetic medicine. Her commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and ethical practices remains steadfast, ensuring that patients receive the best possible care in an industry that is constantly evolving. Indeed, this year alone she has contributed to the publication of three books on ethics, trends and performance. In a world where aesthetics can sometimes seem superficial, Miss Chantrey and her original concepts show that true beauty lies in the harmonious integration of the mind, body, and spirit.
